How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) in WHMCS

Before you begin, you will need a compatible authenticator app on your smartphone or tablet. Popular choices include Google Authenticator, Authy, or Microsoft Authenticator.

1. Log in to your WHMCS Client Area:

  • Go to your WHMCS client area login page.
  • Enter your email address and password and click "Login."

2. Navigate to Security Settings:

  • Once logged in, look for your name or account icon in the top left corner of the page.
  • Click on your name/icon and select "Security Settings" from the dropdown menu.

3. Choose Two-Factor Authentication:

  • On the Security Settings page, you should see an option for "Two-Factor Authentication" or "2FA."
  • Click the "Enable" button or link next to this option.

4. Begin Setup Process:

  • WHMCS will display a welcome message and an "Enable Now" button. Click it to proceed.

5. Scan the QR Code:

  • A QR code will be displayed on your screen. Open your authenticator app on your smartphone/tablet.
  • In your authenticator app, look for an option to "Add Account," "Scan QR Code," or a similar function (often represented by a "+" symbol).
  • Use your phone's camera to scan the QR code presented on your WHMCS screen.

6. Enter the Verification Code:

  • After scanning, your authenticator app will generate a 6-digit verification code. This code typically changes every 30-60 seconds.
  • Enter this 6-digit code into the "Verification Code" field provided in your WHMCS client area.
  • Click "Confirm & Complete."

7. Save Your Backup Codes:

  • This is a crucial step! WHMCS will now display a list of unique "Backup Codes." These codes are essential in case you lose access to your authenticator device (e.g., your phone is lost or broken).
  • Print these codes or save them in a secure, offline location. Do NOT store them on the same device as your authenticator app.
  • Once you have securely saved your backup codes, check the box confirming you have done so.
  • Click "Complete Setup."

8. Two-Factor Authentication is Now Enabled!

  • You will be redirected back to your Security Settings page, where you should see that Two-Factor Authentication is now "Enabled."

Next Time You Log In:

From now on, each time you log in to your WHMCS client area, after entering your email address and password, you will be prompted to enter a 6-digit code from your authenticator app.
